Phantom Blade Zero Combat System: Sha-Chi, Parry & Ghostep

Combat runs on one resource — Sha-Chi. Light attacks are free, heavy attacks and blocking cost it, and perfect defense (parry the Brutal, dodge the Killer) triggers the Ghostep counter.

Sha-Chi: one meter to rule offense and defense

Every combatant — you included — has a health bar and a Sha-Chi meter. It is a blend of stamina, skill and special-attack energy. Basic attacks and dodges cost nothing, so you never stop to wait for a bar. Heavy Sha-Chi attacks and blocking consume it.

When anyone's Sha-Chi empties, they are breached: their stance breaks and they are extremely vulnerable until it refills. Breached enemies eat full combos and finishers. The same rule applies to you — pure aggression without defense will get you breached and punished.

Defense: parry, dodge, or die

Defense rules confirmed by Wikipedia and the IGN hands-on.

Parries negate incoming damage without draining your Sha-Chi and deplete the attacker's instead. Against tougher foes and coordinated groups that all want a piece of you, defense is how aggression stays sustainable. IGN's verdict: it sits between Ninja Gaiden's flow and Sekiro's parry duels — a middle ground with a feel of its own.

Ghostep: the reward for reading the enemy

Parry a Brutal Move or dodge a Killer Move just before it lands and you perform a Ghostep — a slick teleport repositioning behind the enemy that flows directly into a counterattack. It is the signature move of the combat language, and the reason attack recognition matters more than reaction speed.

Weapons make the build

Soul equips two primary weapons and two Phantom Edges. Blades carry a power surge ultimate; Phantom Edges are limited-use specials ranging from cannons and lances to axes and hammers. Verified weapon behavior — from Sanguine's tumbling chains to the Soft Snake Sword wrapping enemy guards — lives on the weapons page, and how to combine them on the builds page.

Difficulty options

Four modes named officially in the State of Play and Wikipedia.
ModeWhat it does
WayfarerCinematic, story-focused — for players who want the world without the grind.
PathbreakerThe standard experience.
HellwalkerAdvanced, adaptive enemy AI — bosses react to distance, punish mistakes and adapt to your playstyle.
66 DaysHellwalker rules plus the story's 66-day counter — every death costs a day, and at zero, the run ends forever.

The 66 Days mode turns IGN's hands-on observation into a rule: death already cost Soul a day of story time — this mode makes every death spend one of your 66. The beginner guide covers which mode to pick first.

Combat questions

What is Sha-Chi in Phantom Blade Zero?

A single combat resource that mixes stamina, skill and energy. Light attacks and dodges are free; heavy Sha-Chi attacks and blocking consume it. Run out and you are breached — stance broken and vulnerable.

How do parries work?

Blocking just as an attack lands is a parry. It negates damage without draining your Sha-Chi and depletes the attacker's instead — against groups and bosses, parrying is essential, not optional.

What are Brutal and Killer moves?

Two telegraphed enemy attack types. Brutal Moves are meant to be parried (blocking them drains your Sha-Chi heavily). Killer Moves cannot be blocked at all — you must dodge.

What is a Ghostep?

A teleport-style dodge that repositions you behind the enemy for an instant counter. It triggers when you parry a Brutal Move or dodge a Killer Move right before it lands.

Is there a stamina system like Dark Souls?

No. Light attacks and dodges never drain a stamina bar — the game is built to keep you attacking. Only heavy attacks and blocking spend Sha-Chi.
